Englewood named general contractor for two Chicago-area projects

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

Englewood Construction says that it has been named general contractor for two Chicago-area projects. The first is the conversion of a former meatpacking building in Chicago’s Fulton Market neighborhood for commercial use.

Construction on the 19,000-sq.-ft., four-story building will begin this summer. The project’s developer is entrepreneur Aiman Humadieh.

The second project is the construction of a new 6,000-sq.-ft. retail building on the border of Chicago’s Uptown and Buena Park neighborhoods. The project, which is part of the development plans for the neighboring Eight Eleven Uptown residential tower, is a joint venture between Harlem Irving Co. and JDL Development. The architect is OKW Architects. Completion is set to begin late this summer.

In Chicago’s burgeoning Fulton Market District, Englewood was selected by entrepreneur Aiman Humadieh for the renovation of a former meatpacking building at 1107 W. Fulton St. The company is collaborating with the development team to finalize designs for the project, which calls for converting the 19,000-sq.-ft. building for future retail, restaurant or office space. Englewood will also rebuild all mechanical and electrical infrastructure and install all new vertical transportation.

In Uptown, Englewood also has been chosen as the general contractor for the construction of a new retail center at 4407 N. Clarendon Ave. Construction is expected to begin this spring, with a target completion date in late summer.

‘The Office’ pop-up bar returns to Replay with five holiday-themed parties

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

The Party Planning Committee at Replay Lincoln Park is reviving its wildly popular The Office-themed pop-up bar for the holiday season. Drawing inspiration from the TV show's Christmas episodes, Replay will host festive parties and events throughout December, including Classy Christmas and Moroccan Christmas. (We can only hope there's an Andy lookalike playing a sitar for entertainment.) Programming will kick off on Friday, November 30 at 7pm.

Stop in on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights to check out Café Disco, themed after Michael Scott's infamous espresso-fueled dance party, where DJs will spin hip-swaying tracks starting at 9pm. Guests won't have to worry about buying tickets or paying cover: The monthlong event is free to attend and open to adults of legal drinking age.

The pop-up ends with “The Ultimatum” New Year’s Eve Celebration on December 31. It's the run's only ticketed event, and early-bird passes will be available soon starting at $50. (You'll have to watch episode 13 of season 7 if you want to see how that one works out.) Take a look at the full schedule below and keep an eye on Replay's Facebook page for additional details and new events.

December 6–12: Classy Christmas

December 7: Ugly Sweater Christmas Party

December 13–19: Moroccan Christmas

December 20–27: Dwight Christmas

Bulls Rumors: Ryan Arcidiacono, Chicago Agree to 'Partially Guaranteed' Contract

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

The Chicago Bulls and guard Ryan Arcidiacono have reportedly agreed on a partially guaranteed contract.

K.C. Johnson of the Chicago Tribune reported the news.

Arcidiacono, 24, spent last season on a two-way contract with the Bulls. He appeared in 24 games, averaging 2.0 points and 1.5 assists per game.

The Bulls have 14 guaranteed contracts on their roster, so Arcidiacono will be part of a battle for the last spot in training camp. Chicago previously claimed Antonius Cleveland off waivers from the Atlanta Hawks earlier this month; Arcidiacono and Cleveland are the two likeliest players to compete for that spot.

The loser of that battle could wind up on a two-way contract. Former Arizona guard Rawle Alkins is holding one of those two slots now, so perhaps they'll look to fill the other with a big, but it also wouldn't be a surprise to see Arcidiacono on a two-way deal if the Bulls cut him after camp.

It's also possible the Bulls will sign additional players to compete with Arcidiacono and Cleveland.

Related Midwest Unveils Tweaked Plans for New CTA Red Line Stop at 15th and Clark

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)
In case you missed it last week, Alderman Dowell held another community meeting to hear how Related Midwest tweaked their plan for a new CTA stop in the South Loop (via Crains):
The developer aiming to turn 62 acres of vacant South Loop land into a sprawling mixed-use campus is closer to winning the support of one local alderman after relocating its plan for a CTA Red Line station that would serve its project.

After 3rd Ward Ald. Pat Dowell rejected Related Midwest's plan last month to put a station at the southeast corner of 15th and Clark streets, the developer presented a revised version last night that moves the station across the street, where it would become a crucial access point for a 13 million-square-foot megadevelopment Related has dubbed "the 78."

Under the tweaked plan, Related would build the station on the ground floor of a building it would develop at the southwest corner of Clark and 15th streets. The underground platform for the station would cut diagonally beneath Clark Street, running from the station house northeast to the southern edge of 15th Street, plans show.

After the meeting, Dowell stopped short of offering her full support for the new plan but commended Related Midwest for responding well to community feedback.

The plan still has a ways to go, but this was definitely a positive development for Related Midwest and this high-profile "78" project.

If you're really interested in listening to the community meeting you can head over to Hello South Loop as they streamed it in its entirety on Facebook Live.

Is one Cubs World Series championship enough for you?

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

In October 1908, if you had told a Cubs fan that the Cubs would not win another World Series for the rest of his lifetime (and I use “his” here because the overwhelming majority of baseball fans in 1908 were men), he would have laughed at you.

If you had then told him that the Cubs wouldn’t win again in his children’s lifetime, his grandchildren’s lifetime or perhaps even in some of his great-grandchildren’s lifetime, he would have likely had you put “way out in left field,” as the hospital then just beyond the left-field wall at West Side Grounds in Chicago was called.

The Cubs were the dominant team in baseball in the first decade of the 20th Century. They won four pennants in five seasons and two World Series. There was no reason to think they wouldn’t continue to do this, with good ownership and solid fan support.

But as you know, that didn’t happen. And those of us who did live to see the Cubs win the World Series in 2016 waited our entire lifetimes for that. No matter your age, you waited a very long time to see your favorite team win it all.

I know I had this feeling, and maybe you did too, you’ve undoubtedly seen it on T-shirts: “JUST ONE BEFORE I DIE.”

So the question I raise here for you is this: Is one enough? If, at the end of your life, the 2016 championship is the only Cubs World Series title in your lifetime, would you feel fulfilled as a Cubs fan?

Or do you need more? Do you need to see the team validate the current run of great seasons with at least one more championship, to show that 2016 wasn’t some sort of cosmic fluke?

Or do you want the Cubs to become the Red Sox? Interestingly, Boston won four of the first 15 World Series. And now they have won four of the most recent 15... with none in between. Many of their fans, like ours, lived and died without ever seeing their team win it all. But now they seem a powerhouse in baseball again, as they were in the early 20th Century. Do you need that as a Cubs fan?

As for me? I’m good now. All I ever wanted was to see the Cubs win the World Series once. If they do it again? That would be great, and of course I’d like to see it. But do I need it?

I don’t believe so. 2016 validated all the years of losing, all the close calls, took away the pain of 1969, 1984, 2003. Sure, those are still memories, but they no longer matter, they don’t define the Cubs as a franchise as they did prior to November 2, 2016.

As I noted at the top of this post, this is mostly a thought exercise. Every one of us likely hopes the Cubs can come back and win another World Series, hopefully even in 2019. But I’d like to know how you feel after having all our dreams come true two years ago.

Keys to the Game: Bulls at Knicks (11.05.18)

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

Tonight the Chicago Bulls visit Madison Square Garden to take on the New York Knicks in the first of three games scheduled between the two teams this season. Both the Bulls and Knicks come in looking to end losing skids, as Chicago has dropped its last four in a row while New York has lost seven of 10 games played this year, included one yesterday to Washington in our Nation’s Capital, 108-95.

For the Knicks, no starter notched more than Damyean Dotson’s 11 points against the Wizards, who entered into the contest sporting a 1-7 mark. Veteran center Enes Kanter posted a team-high 18 points and 12 rebounds off the bench for New York, who shot a miserable 42 percent from the field overall, including 18.5 percent from 3-point range.

As for the Bulls, they came up short at home against Houston on Saturday, 96-88, capping a 0-4 homestand. Chicago outscored the Rockets in the first, second and fourth quarters, but Houston held the Bulls to just seven points in the third, outscoring them 21-7 in what proved to be the difference maker — well that and the fact that Chicago also committed 19 turnovers (six in the third quarter, and six more in the fourth), many of the ridiculous variety, leading to an extra 21 points for the Rockets — to seal the home team’s fate.

Once again Zach LaVine led the charge for Chicago, putting up a team-high 21 points, including going 12-for-13 from the stripe. It was LaVine’s 11th game in a row of 20+ points scored, a career-best. Rookies Wendell Carter Jr. and Chandler Hutchison also turned heads. Carter registered his second double-double of the season with 14 points and 13 rebounds, to go along with two steals and four blocks. Hutchison, the No. 22 overall pick out of Boise State, posted a career-high 12 points and grabbed four rebounds, dished two assists and snagged two steals in 27 minutes off the pine.

Tonight the Bulls are going to need to show they are capable of learning from past mistakes by tightening up their play at both ends of the floor. Defensively, Chicago needs to bring an endless supply of energy and a stubborn will, vowing that they will not allow New York to outwork or outhustle them in any phase of the game. Every player that steps onto the floor this evening is more than capable of delivering high energy and maximum effort. As battered and bruised as the Bulls are these days without the services of regular starters Kris Dunn (left MCL sprain) and Lauri Markkanen (right elbow sprain), as well as key reserves Bobby Portis (right MCL sprain) and Denzel Valentine (left ankle sprain), they still have to play with an edge. Chicago must be the first to dive on the floor for a loose ball and the first to pull down a rebound in order to give themselves a chance to be the last one standing at the end of the night.

Offensively the Bulls are at their best when they come out of the gates hard and fast, establishing a fast pace from the opening tip and pressure the opposition to keep up with them. It’s especially important the Bulls take command of the defensive glass and look to get out in transition as much as possible. Setting and keeping a fast pace denies the defense opportunities to set up and close off driving and passing lanes to the hoop.

Night in and night out the Bulls have to exploit their youth and athleticism, turning games into track meets. When forced to set up in the halfcourt, the Bulls have to spread out all along the three-point arc to open the middle of the floor and drawing the defense to the perimeter and out from under the basket. It’s also important the ball doesn’t get stuck in anyone’s hands for too long. The ball must be generously shared while at the same time Chicago has to keep turnovers in check. Quick and steady ball movement forces defenses to overreact, scramble and fall apart.

It’s also really important the Bulls make sure to get everyone involved on offense. They can’t afford to slow things down, turning their playbook into a series of one-on-one battles. For the Bulls to outscore opponents the ball needs to jump from player-to-player and from side-to-side to unearth open looks and paths to the basket.

As mentioned earlier the Bulls need to storm out of the gates the moment the game tips off and stay focused and determined throughout — especially when playing on the road — as the energy and momentum they produce will have to come from within.

Even though they are forced to play without the help of four key players, the Bulls can give themselves a real shot of coming out on top this evening by bringing hustle, muscle and plenty of grit to Gotham City.

Surprise! Glendale is downed

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

Surprise Saguaros 10, Glendale Desert Dogs 1

Luis Robert (CF): 2-for-4, 0 BB, 1 K

Laz Rivera (2B): 0-for-3, 0 BB, 1 K

Danny Dopico: 1 IP, 1 H, 1 ER 3 BB, 1 K

Another day, and another single for Robert out of the gate. Before his single, the Desert Dogs were able to put a run on the board, but could not get Robert home once he was on base.

With Rivera down at ninth in the batting order, his first at-bat did not come until the third inning. Still with the 1-0 lead, Rivera grounded out on the fourth pitch. As the game left the top of the fourth inning. Surprise was able to tack on five runs, to take a 6-1 lead. Not a great inning for the Desert Dogs.

Robert came up again in the fourth inning, and guess what, he singled again but could not come around to score. To the chagrin of Desert Dog pitchers, the Saguaros offense would not let up, scoring three more runs in the fifth to really put the game out of reach, at 9-1. The woes continued for Rivera, as he struck out in the sixth. But at least Robert has two hits.

As the game drew to a close, so did the success for the White Sox prospects. Robert and Rivera were not able to collect hits in their final at-bats. Dopico came into the game in the ninth and had immense trouble with his command, with three walks. Dopico threw 13 balls compared to just 10 strikes.

But let’s end on a happier note, with Robert praise and a slow-motion swing, in case you missed it yesterday:
